Understated: underground construction in focus with RSHP and Arup

Lecture
Tue 17 Apr 2018

We welcome you to an evening that will celebrate the understated achievements of underground construction. Toby Jeavons, associate partner at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, will talk about the majestic new whisky distillery in Scotland for The Macallan, which is currently reaching completion. The distillery will serve to uncover the processes of whisky production and welcome visitors, preserving the historic natural landscape through its integration into the ground itself.

Bob Lang, director at Arup, will then talk about underground construction from a structural engineering perspective, having also worked on the Macallan Distillery. Usually an advocate of high-rise construction, on this occasion he will examine the benefits of building down, considering some of the challenges to be overcome on the way.

The presentations and panel discussion will be followed by a drinks reception and private view of the Welcome To The Underworld exhibition.

Speakers include:

- Toby Jeavons, associate partner, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners

- Bob Lang, director, Arup

Chair: Vanessa Norwood, creative director, The Building Centre

Registration will be from 6.00pm for 6.30pm start.

The evening is generously supported by RIW. It is part of the Welcome To The Underworld exhibition programme, curated by The Built Environment Trust.
