The Engineering Club: Freeform Engineering

Talk
Tue 10 Feb 2009

This event has been rescheduled for 30 April 2009.

Speaker: Rupert Soar

Dr Rupert Soar and his colleagues are pioneering new capabilities for Digital Architecture through Freeform Construction. Based on scaled Rapid Manufacturing processes, fabricated structures will exceed the capabilities of traditional structures by integrating physiomimetic processes at the core of the design process. As exemplars of this emerging capability, Rupert will demonstrate how natural ventilation systems, unknown to science, have emerged from the study of termites and their incredible mounds. For the first time the complexity of mound physiology is revealed as a transferable technology made possible through Freeform Construction methods. Rupert will describe the continuing developments in Freeform Construction and the startling discoveries surrounding mound ventilation strategies.
