Case Studies:
Trevor Horne of Trevor Horne Architects will discuss the Orsman Whitmore Building in Hackney. This former petrol station and forecourt is now a 5 storey building equipped with studios for artists and architects as well as apartments. The building's in-situ concrete frame employs the Cobiax concrete floor system - the first time it was used in the UK - allowing to make lightweight slabs with column - free spans of 8.5m. These internal spans allow greater flexibility in the layout.
John Smart of John Smart Architects will share ideas on The Coach House in Dulwich. The Coach House has bespoke finishes and details, with carefully designed concrete elements, such as a staircase of exposed black concrete seeded with granite and basalt chips. It leads down to a shallow ramp flanked by a sculptural element made from board-marked concrete. Floors on the garden level are grey polished concrete with bespoke brass and iroko thresholds. Bathroom floors are half-white matte concrete, and the living room fireplace is precast.
Jake Edgley of Edgley Design will discuss Pear Tree House in Dulwich. This backyard house is wedged between terraced houses. The ground floor walls are cast in concrete with vertical timber boards. To offset the matt concrete finishes of the walls, a polished concrete floor was installed throughout the ground floor. The concrete external walls were cast in-situ, with two leaves either side of the insulation.
