Concrete Elegance

Two residential projects, The Houseboat in Dorset and Weston Street in London, will be presented in the next Concrete Elegance. The design teams will discuss how exposed cast in-situ concrete has been used in both projects. Each scheme demonstrates a different technique for creating surface texture including exposed aggregate and timber board-marking. They will give insight on the design development, construction processes and communication necessary to create these extraordinary contemporary spaces.

Weston Street in London
This development of eight apartments is the latest project by Solidspace, each embodying key principles for residential architecture developed by founder Roger Zogolovitch.

The Solidspace DNA exploits volume and light through use of an open plan arranged over split-levels or tessellated sections, creating double-height spaces flooded with natural light. Material selection is also fundamental. Here cast in situ concrete structure brings character to internal spaces through exposed smooth soffits and internal walls and horizontal board-marked concrete exposed on the concrete inner leaf of the brick faced external cavity wall.

The Houseboat in Dorset
Described by the architect as an upturned boat, or the belly of a whale, this house has strong maritime connections. It is built in the grounds of 1930’s modernist property containing a salvaged interior from SS Mauretania, over-looking Poole Harbour. The house is designed as two timber hulls, upturned for shelter and tar-black on the outside. These sit upon a solid base of rough cast in situ concrete, containing the bedrooms. All the concrete, including a three-storey arch that holds up the house, and central stair, is raw in texture, with exposed aggregate, like a weathered sea wall. The Houseboat has won the South West RIBA Award 2017. This project will be presented by Mole Architects, within the context of their other residential projects using exposed concrete.
