Essential to the design of attack-resistant windows are their protective qualities and aesthetic appearance. In listed buildings, for example, the window design must comply with English Heritage standards. This applies to windows such as sash, casement, fixed frame windows such as fanlights and side windows for front entrances.
After considerable research and some innovation KSDW have created a limited range of timber sash and casement windows, which are manufactured in the UK. Although they look identical to ordinary sash and casement windows, they are far stronger and will resist attack for much longer than standard timber sash and casement windows.
The secret to their success is the use of hardwood timber, concealed steel reinforcement including integral steel straps for fixing the windows to the building structure and the best possible secure glazing that can be accommodated by the windows; a range of different security glazing is available depending on stipulated security requirements or perceived threat levels.
The design and development of these windows follows increasing demand from clients in listed buildings and houses in conservation areas. These windows can be produced to look the same as existing windows that need replacement and have been installed successfully in properties where planning restrictions have been a key factor and, indeed, constraint.
We can also offer security windows manufactured by Torterolo and Re in Italy and this is a very secure system. These can be produced as side hung casements or fixed panels and due to the amount of steel and security glass (which is also available in different grades) they can be very heavy. These windows are ENV 1627 class 3 and are classed as “Anti Bandit”. They are an ideal solution for homes where planning is not a major issue (side alleys, rear windows etc). These windows have excellent U-Values which can be as low as 1.0 W/m² K.
