Weymouth Community Fire Station, Dorset

21 Feb 2012
Case study
The new £6.5 million Weymouth Community Fire Station in Dorset is set to make its mark in the county with a stunning wave form roof which has been made watertight due to the flexibility of the versatile and world beating Alwitra Evalon® V single ply membrane.

Designed by Tetris Solutions and constructed by Morgan Sindall for Dorset Fire and Rescue, a prominent feature of the steel frame building is the striking glazed community entrance together with the wave-form roof and the glass service bay doors which give a clear view of the fire appliances.

Specialist roofing and cladding contractor Coverworld Construction Ltd specified 2000m2 of Evalon® V single ply membrane for its workability and long lasting performance.

The two high level roofs of the station are in sinusiodal form with contrasting dark grey and white colours and incorporate a 'stepped curved' polyester powder coated Aluminium Verge detail. The flat roofs consist of roof insulation and Evalon® V single ply membrane with aluminium capping to the perimeters.  Coverworld also supplied and installed the louvre wall cladding and rain water goods.

“This has been a highly successful project for us. With the striking waveform main roof and stepped perimeter detail this project was both technically demanding and on-site challenging, however, with the assistance of the comprehensive technical backup provided by ICB and the excellent site skills of our own highly trained ICB approved installers, we achieved a finished product which is not only practical but also aesthetically pleasing,” commented Phillip Brand, Managing Director of Coverworld Construction.

“The smooth running of this project was achieved through the excellent working relationship we had with the architect Graham Stevenson of Tetris Solution, Project Manager Paul Finch of Morgan Sindall and Technical Representative Mike Williams of ICB,’ added Phillip Brand.  “We will not hesitate to recommend Alwitra on further projects.”

Specified for its world class waterproofing qualities, Alwitra Evalon® V is a unique membrane that provided the project with the ultimate low cost, long term solution to its waterproofing.

It can be fully adhered using a range of special adhesives, as well as mechanically fixed, loose laid and ballasted. Alternatively it is available in a specially developed self adhesive backing – ideal for flame/heat free environments.

Alwitra Evalon® V is just one product in a wide portfolio of highly engineered products making up ICB’s Ultimate Roofing System. This includes fine quality flashings, edge trims, roof lights, rainwater outlets and every component for extensive or intensive green roofs. Every ICB roof is protected by a comprehensive guarantee that gives cover for up to twenty years.

Opened in July 2011 by the Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Graham Winter, the unique transparency of this new build operational fire station puts on show the fire fighting machinery as well as inviting the public in to promote full community engagement with the fire safety and prevention service.  The station offers a range of facilities and includes an interactive fire education centre, fitness room, IT suite, cafeteria, community rooms and a multipurpose studio.
