Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre, Stratford

23 Jan 2012
Case study

Kingspan Benchmark’s polyester powder coated Aluminium Hook-on-Cassette Façade System has been installed as part of the stunning exterior to the new Westfield Stratford City shopping centre, the largest of its kind in Europe.

The 1.9 million square foot shopping centre is the prestigious gateway to the Olympic Park and contains over 250 shops and more than 70 restaurants. It is also home to a state of the art Vue Cinema, bowling alley, offices, hotels and anchor stores Marks & Spencer and John Lewis.

The 1500m2 of Aluminium Hook-on-Cassette’s fitted on the building used a complimentary colour pallet of satin finish Pearl Beige, Pearl Mouse and Pearl Dark Grey. These subtle combinations of colours allow the façade cassettes to blend perfectly with the other glass and steel elements of the building’s dramatic exterior.

English Architectural Glazing were responsible for fitting the system. Project Manager, Brian Smith said: “We were extremely happy with the Benchmark Hook-on-Cassette Façade System. This system was selected for the project as the Karrier Panels behind the facade were able to achieve high structural and thermal performance, while also representing excellent overall value for money.”

Kingspan Benchmark’s long spanning Karrier Panels were used to structurally support the large PPC Aluminium cassettes. Benchmark was extremely helpful during the building process, carrying out project specific calculations and working up project specific details.”

Forming part of the major regeneration within the area, the £1.8 billion Westfield Stratford City centre employs more than 10,000 permanent members of staff and attracted 1 million visitors to the area within the first week of opening. The building is able to harness the power of these shoppers by using special “green walkways” which convert the kinetic energy of staff and visitors footsteps into electricity for the centre.
