On Tuesday 20 February the exhibition Timber Transformer, curated by The Built Environment Trust in partnership with Timber Trade Federation, was officially launched at The Building Centre.
Speakers included Harriett Baldwin MP, Minister of State at the Department For International Development, Hilary Benn MP and the deputy ambassador of Indonesia, Mr Adam Mulawarman Tugio. They were marking the occasion of Indonesia being the first nation to supply sustainable tropical hardwood into the EU under the new FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade) agreement, which has been more than a decade in development. Hilary Benn spoke passionately about his having participated as a minister in the initiation of the work, emphasising the vital role that properly managed social forestry can have in protecting rainforest species and communities, contrasting this with the environmental and other issues surrounding illegal logging. The evening celebrated Indonesia as the first country to release FLEGT-licensed timber, while government representatives from Ghana were in attendance as it works to be the next country to issue FLEGT licences for timber.
Timber Transformer is open to the public at The Building Centre until 27 April 2018. Alternatively, see the virtual exhibition here.
