It was the advantages that Thru-Wall could offer on both design and cost that secured this contract against more traditional build solutions for the complete wall facade which consists of a structural insulated panels (SIPS), complete with all interfaces and external finishes, clad with a fabricated aluminium rainscreen solution that will boast six unique separate colour finishes to achieve the architect’s external visual effect.
Working alongside main contractors Lend Lease Construction, Thru-Wall will be responsible for providing an innovative and integrated modular offsite approach to ensure that the two four-storey buildings will be able to house 1500 students, as well as providing accommodation for 120 post-16 education students. As well as teaching facilities, the building will house a recording studio, theatre, music and drama rooms, a dance studio, an ICT and media suite, meeting rooms, catering facilities, a learning resource centre and a cafe.
Thru-Wall’s ability to meet the facade design requirements of a staggered window elevation treatment was a critical factor. By providing an inherent structural support without many internal areas of additional secondary and primary steel supports, Thru-Wall will fully support the modular ribbon glazed window wall facade without any steelwork.
To demonstrate the advantages of Thru-Wall at the tender stage, the Thru-Wall product engineers produced a fully engineered structural bay mock up that worked technically, structurally and under performance to meet strict standards set down by the main contractor.
Thru-Wall also comes complete with a full, latent defect 20-year SIPS/external finish insurance cover - the only combined cover available in the UK.
