The Halston, Carlisle

4 Apr 2014
Case study
The refurbishment of a former post office building in Carlisle is utilising Durapipe HTA pipework to feed the domestic water services.
The listed neo-classical four storey building, originally built in 1916, is being converted into a new luxury aparthotel – The Halston. The external facade is being restored, while the interior will be completely refurbished to offer 16 self-contained one and two bedroom apartments suites on the upper floors, while the ground floor will house a stunning reception, cafe, bar, restaurant and function rooms.
As part of the project, M&E contractors PK Engineering Services was tasked with installing a reliable pipework solution to cater for the hot and cold water services throughout the building and turned to Durapipe HTA.
Specified in sizes up to 90mm, Durapipe HTA was installed to transport water from the mains water supply in the basement plant room and distribute it throughout the building to feed the individual apartments.
While the characteristics and installation benefits were major factors in choosing Durapipe HTA, the main influencer was the fact that the plastic option reduces the risk of thefts from site. PK Engineering Services was looking for an effective solution that offered high performance properties, without making the site a target for metal thiefs.
Commenting on the pipework selection, Sean Campbell, mechanical project manager at PK Engineering Services, said: “Due to the nature of the restoration project, there was nowhere secure to store the pipework and so we needed a system that wouldn’t be a target for metal thefts. Durapipe HTA was the ideal solution; in addition to eliminating the risk of theft from site, its high performance characteristics, combined with the quick and easy installation, provided a cost effective solution.”
Durapipe HTA offers excellent corrosion and limescale resistant properties, increasing the lifespan of the pipework and avoiding costly maintenance and replacement work. Its lightweight nature, combined with its quick and simple solvent weld jointing technique, which eliminates the need for hot works or skilled welders, further reduces the installation cost and time of projects.
