The Challenge:
The Gramophone Works, former home of Saga records and epicentre of reggae music in London, is located in West London’s best-kept secret, Kensal Rise. In this installation for the landmark canal side commercial campus, which comprises a mix of refurbished and extended office spaces, optimum daylight was a key part of the dynamic design. High levels of light transmission and faithful replication of the pre-existing roof glazing were essential for the refurbishment and to ensure a BREEAM rating of ‘very good’.
The Solution:
A single ply membrane was selected for the roof, offering seamless interfaces to other construction elements and the flexibility needed for the complex refurbishment project. We worked closely with the roofing contractor to phase the installation of the rooflight along with the single ply membrane. Using single ply membrane allowed the upstands to be sealed and welded before the main roof was ready to be weatherproofed. The single ply flashings were then welded to the main roof area covering at the end of the project which allowed the installation of the rooflight to continue uninterrupted. The new aluminium continuous roof glazing exactly matches the pre-existing in appearance, whilst delivering improved solar control through double glazed low e glass. The bespoke Em-Glaze monopitch rooflights also feature custom fixing details to incorporate with existing concrete structural beams and custom flashings for head detail. The removal of the existing fragile units presented many challenges during the project, but the staged installation of main units and flashings allowed for works to be completed more easily.
The Benefits:
The dramatic office environment benefits from optimal light levels, delivering an outstanding internal environment for the occupants. Better concentration, increased productivity, more motivation and morale – all proven to be achieved through enhanced daylight levels - and this impressive office space offers it all. Combine that with the decreased energy bills and a lower carbon footprint that more natural light brings, and the benefits felt by the building owners’ are also comprehensive.
