With a groundbreaking design the Garden Bridge proposes to integrate a new kind of public space and pedestrian crossing into the fabric of the city, adding to London’s rich horticultural heritage. The project was conceived by actress Joanna Lumley and is designed by Thomas Heatherwick with Arup through a commission with Transport for London and the Garden Bridge Trust.
The 367m long by 30m wide structure will be situated between Waterloo Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. This will provide a major pedestrian crossing in line with the Mayor’s transport strategy and aspirations to improve pedestrian access and river crossings in the heart of the city. The bridge will be a destination – a new public garden and the first of its kind in the UK. It will deliver new and enhanced views up and down the river.
The bridge is also intended to act as a catalyst for the continuing regeneration of the area. The bridge will connect the vibrant South Bank with the less visited Temple and North Bank area. It will open new walking routes to and from Covent Garden and Soho.
Planning permission has been granted and the opening is planned for 2018.
