Super depot is signed, sealed and delivered

7 Apr 2017
Case study

Increased capacity and greater process efficiency were the focus for a leading UK postal delivery company when it came to replacing its 20-year-old depot with a new and improved ‘super depot’.

With a £3.5 million investment, DPD’s super depot in Exeter, which was completed in early 2016, has double the capacity and is four times as efficient as the old depot, creating 35 new jobs and handling a staggering 25,000 parcels a day.

Located at the Skypark business park near Exeter Airport, the depot needed to be a practical industrial building large enough to house a vast number of parcels with the capacity to accommodate a growing workforce.

The purpose-built depot forms part of the largest ever expansion for DPD following a period of sustained growth within the company, which employs more than 9,000 people in the UK.

Euroclad products provided the high quality industrial feel that the 5,618m2 building needed. The project’s installer Progressive Systems chose Euroclad’s Elite wall and roof systems, offering easy installation as well as a 25-year system guarantee.

Euroclad’s ElitePLUS 51 system was used on the walls and the ElitePLUS1 system was used on the roof with an energy-efficient 0.17W/m2K U-Value. Although the depot was a large-scale development, project costs also had to be considered and so quality, cost-effective profiles were used on both the roof and walls.

Euroclad’s trapezoidal wall profiles in both metallic silver and slate grey Colorcoat Prisma gave the building the modern industrial look that was specified by the architects.

The roof consisted of 5972m2 of trapezoidal profile sheets in Alaska grey and 1600m2 of Elite 1 rooflights.

32/1000 external profile sheets and 19/1000 liner profile sheets were used on the building.

Chris Phillips from Progressive Systems Ltd, which installed the wall and roof systems and profiles, said: “DPD’s purpose-built super depot was a huge investment for the company and so it was vital that the cladding of the building was not only practical but hard-wearing and long-lasting too. Using the right products was essential and, having worked with Euroclad on a number of projects before, we knew that that they would be able to offer us the best products for this large-scale build.”

Euroclad’s diverse range of steel and aluminium cladding systems are available in a range of colours and options, providing great value products on time and within budget.
