Ashford Cladding used Topdek insulated roof deck panels incorporating a Flag single-ply membrane in lead grey to replace the original roof at the Alton Hotel. The refurbishment has successfully converted the Victorian hotel into Castle View, comprising 16 contemporary and desirable apartments overlooking Scarborough’s spectacular North Bay.
Topdek is a factory pre-engineered single fix insulated roof deck suitable for flat, pitched or curved roof applications. Topdek’s PIR insulation core does not contain any ozone depleting substances (ODS) and is LPCB FIREsafe certified which enables the building to be classed as non-combustible.
Ashley Hackford of Ashford Cladding said: “I’m really pleased with this project. The hotel is situated in a conservation area and so all products and materials had to be very carefully chosen in order to ensure a sympathetic conversion. We regularly use Topdek and this project demonstrates its versatility, as the lead grey colour of the membrane really complements the surrounding environment of the traditional Victorian seaside frontage.
“We use Topdek because of its reliability. The panels arrive on site as complete, factory prepared units and we can be confident that the precise panel sizing and quantities we have specified will be exactly what arrives, which means no wastage. The unique self-coring screw means that it goes on very quickly and is easy to install.”
Topdek is more commonly used in the construction of the building envelope for large warehouses and distribution centres, however contractors and developers are now finding new and interesting applications for the product. Selecting it for the affectionate conversion of this elegant Victorian hotel shows the increasing scope for Topdek, and demonstrates that not only is it thermally efficient and quick to install, it is also an extremely versatile product which is quickly becoming an attractive alternative to traditional build up methods.
