Rural Country Retreat, Henley on Thames

23 Jun 2014
Case study

High performance timber windows and doors by specialist manufacturer Mumford & Wood have been specified by O B Architecture, Winchester, Hampshire, for a beautiful rural country retreat close to lively Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire.  The award-winning practice specialises in contemporary houses, masterplans and urban strategies.

While many traditional elements feature in the design of this newbuild family home many contemporary design treatments have been incorporated internally.  The dwelling adopts an interesting L shape floor plan, part of which is single-storey and part two-storey. Three bedroom suites occupy the second floor accommodation while a stunning kitchen/dining room opens onto a large formal reception room and a cosy tv room. Use of special shape fixed glazing panels to the gable end of the single-storey garden room forms an attractive vaulted space.

Georgian-style sash windows from Mumford & Wood’s Conservation™ range were specified for this elegant property including an unusual three-pane top sliding sash over six-pane bottom sliding sash configuration.  These double glazed, energy rated windows have modern pre-tensioned spring balances in place of traditional weights and pulleys.  Coordinating Conservation™ casements and fully glazed French doorsets, both bar and non-bar options, have also been integrated into this 21st Century design.  A dramatic 4.5 metre, five-leaf Conservation™ bi-fold door provides dramatic natural light to the lounge and easy access to the spacious grounds.  Made-to-order bi-fold doors are available in a variety of interior opening configurations to best suit the available space.

Recent modifications to products in the Conservation™ range, which includes box sash windows, casements, French doorsets, bi-fold and entrance doors  has resulted in a collection of thermally efficient products with superior aesthetics.  A combination of modern manufacturing technology with authentic period detailing has earned the brand award-winning status.  A choice of single and double glazed windows are available with a variety of glass unit sizes up to 24mm as standard.  The new 12mm krypton gas filled double glazed unit achieves the original putty glazed appearance of period windows and is ideal for use where traditional interior and exterior decorative features are to be retained.  There is also the option to select Victorian sheet glass for a truly authentic appearance.

All products are now internally glazed for added security and the new colour match and dual colour paint or stain facility is proving popular.  The company uses only high quality micro-porous factory-applied paint or stain that achieve a durable, low maintenance finish.  Manufactured from the finest engineered and sustainably sourced timber, Mumford & Wood’s windows and doors have an expected life of between 56 – 65 years.

Conservation™ products are BSI A rated in accordance with the British Woodworking Federation’s third-party Timber Window Accreditation Scheme, and achieve low U-values that exceed current Part L Building Regulations’.  They also carry the BSI Kitemark and Energy Saving Trust accreditations while many products meet Secured by Design criteria.
