Root Bench by Yong Ju Lee

In Seoul, South Korea, an organically-shaped bench has been installed in Hangang Park.

Designed by Yong Ju Lee, ‘Root Bench’ is the reinterpretation of the winning proposal in Hangang Art Competition and provides a space for communal relaxation.

100-foot in diameter, Lee's sculpture mimics the roots of a tree and merges into the grass as though it has grown its way through the park.

Lee's Root Bench is made from pieces of woods which are attached to a metal frame (with concrete footing).

The benches are three different heights (for children and adults) and allow people to sit or lie down, creating a place for spatial connectivity.

Root Bench is designed by a computer algorithm and blurs the line between the natural environment and man-made installation.
