The Riverside Walk Enhancement Strategy proposes environmental enhancements along the riverside walk, which forms part of the Thames Path National Trail.
The original strategy was adopted in 2005 and has led to 16 completed projects that have opened the City of London Riverside Walk for commuters, tourists and runners. The walkway encourages healthier lifestyles and a sustainable alternative mode of transport. The 2014 revised strategy addresses remaining areas in need of enhancement to create:
- A continuous waterside walkway away from busy traffic corridors
- A fully accessible walkway including routes into the City
- Space for public art, other activities and events such as the City of London Festival and the Thames Festival
- Open spaces that allow for tree planting and increased greenery to soften the environment and strengthen the biodiversity corridor along the riverside.
The Riverside Walk Enhancement Strategy aims to make the northern bank – the sunnier side of the Thames – as popular as the South Bank while preserving quiet pockets of space.
