A combination of high performance flooring from Polyflor’s luxury vinyl tile and sheet vinyl flooring ranges was recently used to create a dynamic, geometric flooring design at Solihull School’s brand new Sixth Form centre.
Installed by Tamworth based Gladston Contract Flooring Specialists, Pearlazzo PUR homogeneous sheet flooring was used to produce a hexagonal patterned floor design in the centre’s breakout and dining area whilst Expona Control PUR luxury vinyl tiles created a pathway through the common room area and into the adjoining corridors and staircases. The £4.5m new build project at the independent school in the West Midlands was managed by main contractor Speller Metcalfe and designed by Birmingham based architects Malcolm Payne Design Group.
Sean Morgan, Senior Deputy Headmaster at Solihull School commented, “For our state of the art Sixth Form facilities we wanted to create a bright, modern space that will motivate our students. Polyflor flooring fitted our needs perfectly, being both practical and visually appealing.”
Four shades from the popular Pearlazzo PUR collection (Mineral, Rain Cloud, Charcoal and Sunrise) were selected to create the geometric flooring design, with hexagon shapes created by Polyflor’s in-house Design Service using precision waterjet cutting technology. Available in 24 contemporary shades including neutrals, pastels and brights, Pearlazzo features distinctive tonal chips and pearlescent flakes which are blended and fused into a solid base colour to create a distinctive decorative finish.
Expona Control PUR luxury vinyl tiles in Light Elm were installed in circulation areas to offer sustainable wet slip resistance where slippages are more likely to occur. The innovative Expona Control PUR range of LVT safety flooring combines the design benefits of an LVT with the sustainable slip resistance of an HSE compliant safety floor suitable for commercial environments. With a 2.5mm gauge, 0.7mm wear layer and 14 design options, the slip resistance produced by the aluminium oxide particles incorporated into Expona Control tiles is sustainable for the guaranteed life of the product, due to its achievement of 36+ in the Pendulum Wet Test and 20 microns of surface roughness.
Both Pearlazzo and Expona Control ranges are popular choices for education environments due to their UV cured and cross-linked polyurethane PUR coating which allows for a simple polish-free maintenance regime and a reduced need for energy, power, water and chemical consumption.

Proving their environmental credentials, the Pearlazzo PUR and Expona Control PUR flooring collections achieve BRE Global A+ ratings in education facilities which can contribute to BREEAM credits, as can the products’ BES 6001 certification which demonstrates compliance with a recognised responsible sourcing scheme as certified by the BRE.
