The new £30 million pit and paddock buildings from Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd are housed between Club Corner and Abbey. The development is scheduled for completion in 2011 and will include new garages, a race control building, media centre, hospitality and VIP spectator zones and a primary paddock.
John Brennan, Joint Managing Director of design and build structural steelwork specialists Barrett Steel Buildings commented “The Silverstone roof is very dynamic in form; it rises and falls and flares to mimic movement. Trying to achieve this fluidity through straight cold rolled sections brought about unique design challenges. Kingspan are a long standing supply chain partner with Barrett Steel and the intricacies of the design combined with Kingspan’s technical excellence made the choice of their products an easy one.”
He added “This is a great opportunity for the UK structural steelwork industry to show the rest of the world that steelwork is still the first choice material combining performance with value in a sustainable package. Barrett Steel Buildings believe that repeat working with quality clients, professional teams and suppliers such as Kingspan is the only truly sustainable form of construction.”
A major advantage of specifying cold rolled steel is that it is very efficient in terms of the amount of steel needed to provide a given structural strength. The Kingspan Multibeam purlins and rails are engineered to ensure maximum performance whilst minimising the material content and are available in section heights from 145mm to 350mm, with flange widths from 65mm to 90mm and gauges from 1.2mm to 2.7mm.
The improved sigma shape of Multibeam makes it stiffer than other common shapes of purlin. This enhanced shape of Multibeam allows efficient use of the high strength steel (minimum 450N/mm2) providing longer spans that can be handled practically on site.
Designed to optimise composite floor construction, the Multideck range has a wider standard cover width, requiring fewer panels and sidelaps, and has a comprehensive range of accessories allowing for easy installation of ceilings and services.
Manufactured from galvanised steel, Kingspan Multideck 60-V2 complies with BS EN 10143 and BS EN 10326 with a guaranteed minimum yield strength of 350N/mm2 and a minimum total coating mass (including both sides) of 275 g/m2 and has a fire performance of up to 4 hours.
Kingspan Structural Products is one of Britain’s leading designers and manufacturers of structural steel components for the construction industry. Kingspan operates one of the largest and most advanced production complexes in Europe, manufacturing over 50,000 tonnes of steel products each year.
