Pioneering wood modification company Kebony unveils third annual Sustainability Report

31 May 2024
Case study

Kebony, the leading global producer of dually modified™ wood, has reaffirmed its position as a frontrunner for a safer and greener global construction industry, following the launch of the company’s third annual Sustainability Report.

Produced in alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals, and using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines as framework, the Kebony Sustainability Report 2023 provides a transparent assessment of the year-on-year improvements the Norwegian technology company continues to make relating to its ESG performance and carbon footprint – calculated across each industry-approved Scope 1-4 carbon emissions categories - as well the roadmap Kebony will take to further better its environmental impact in the long-term.

Reflecting on the publication of Kebony’s latest Sustainability Report, Tom Paemeleire, Chief Executive Officer for Kebony, commented: “As a company, we recognise that our wood products bring benefit to our customers and to the environment; we are committed to the value of making a positive impact to our daily operations and organisation. We are proud to share our sustainability vision and roadmap as a standard for the global construction industry.”

Through delivery of its environmentally friendly wood, Kebony provides a benefit to the global community by helping preserve the planet’s endangered hardwood forests, which contain the vital carbon sinks that combat the collective threat of rising greenhouse gas. Developed in Norway and produced in Norway and Belgium, the patented Kebony® technology permanently transforms sustainably sourced softwood species such as pine into dually modified™ wood - with features that are comparable, and in some cases superior, to those of tropical hardwoods.

While hardwoods can take 80-200 years to grow, the fast-growing FSC certified softwoods used by Kebony are specifically planted for this purpose and grow to the desired sizes in a mere 25-30 years. During the growth of these trees, carbon is captured from the atmosphere, contributing to CO2 sequestration.

For the reporting year 2023, Kebony products sold across 30 countries worldwide are calculated to have contained 8,495 tonnes of CO2 equivalents. This figure has been achieved alongside a reduction in the annual energy consumption across Kebony’s two production sites in Belgium and Norway, down from 14,811MwH in 2022 to 7,020MwH in 2023.

Looking to the future, this report outlines Kebony’s agenda for further investments and the operational requirements the company will undertake to further minimise energy consumption across its’ business practices and reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035. This roadmap includes plans to reduce waste-water streams at Kebony’s production sites and support for new applications of the patented Kebony dually modified™ technology, with the company continuing to make investment on research and development, improving the output of its sustainable wood products to a greater global audience.
