Help us collect the stories behind Paddington's Built Environment!
We are on the look out again for the places that make an area special for different individuals.
This might be a bench where you rest with your granny on the way back from school, the tree under which you had your first kiss or the building you lived in when you first arrived in London. These personal landmarks create feelings of connection and belonging to an area. They can represent shared moments or individual experiences, they can evoke a variety of emotions and even feelings but they all ground us in the local area filling the space with memories and attachments
Volunteers Needed
The Built Environment Trust (BET) and Architecture for Kids CIC are recruiting a group of dedicated volunteers who can commit to a minimum of 3.5 days between 21 January – 2 February 2025, to speak to people in North Paddington and record their personal landmarks.
No previous experience required but an interest in the local area and in talking to people would ensure you enjoy the project.
The project will start with a half day training on Tuesday 21 January (times and location to be decided depending on people’s availability and preference).
The training will cover:
- Background to the project and who we are at the Built Environment Trust and Architecture for Kids CIC
- Discussions around landmarks and what they mean to us
- The role of volunteers in the project
- How to engage with people of all ages to encourage them to share their stories through sketches and conversations.
- Practical things like, how will we collect the stories, expenses (£8/day) and dates.
To find out more or get in touch with Sandra Hedblad, Head of Learning at BET. Either via email shedblad@buildingcentre.co.uk or call 020 7692 6219. Deadline for getting in touch is Wednesday 15 January. If you are expressing interest, please include a sentence explaining why this project is of interest to you.
What is the Built Environment?
The built environment is all around us, we use it every day. It’s the roads we use, the buildings we inhabit, the parks we visit and the infrastructure that makes modern life possible.
The Built Environment Trust is a charity looking at how the built environment impacts our lives and how it enables or hinders us to live happily and healthily. Architecture for Kids CIC’s mission is to inspire creativity and build self-confidence by engaging people of all ages in discussions about architecture, design and sustainability.
We look forward to hearing from you!
