Morton Fraser Solicitors

News
Morton Fraser LLP are a long established legal firm with their roots in Edinburgh. Due to phenomenal growth in recent years the company found that they were rapidly outgrowing their existing offices in their Queen street premises, situated in the Old Town in the financial district. Whilst enjoying a fabulous location, the building lacked the necessary expansion that the firm required as it was literally ‘bulging at the seams’. A mix of filing cabinets, rotating storage and static shelving was being used in the cellular offices throughout the building. After much deliberation and searching, a lease was signed by the Partners for space at the new Quartermile II development, set in the new financial district and a move date was set for November 2009.
Renowned local Architects practice Simon Laird Associates was commissioned to assist in space planning and advise on fittings and furniture, whilst the move itself was coordinated between Alasdair MacRitchie, Business Services Manager for Morton Fraser and Yvonne Jansen of Space Solutions. Alasdair MacRitchie was also overall Project Manager on the move, liaising with all parties, including the fit-out contractor.

In any new office it pays to carefully manage space—the most precious commodity—even in a new larger office! To this end, Alasdair and Simon Laird, between them, decided to install a number of mobile shelving systems on the 3 main working floors.
A number of firms, including the incumbent suppliers to Morton Fraser were called in and their solutions considered. One of the most important factors in the open plan office was the appearance of the system and after seeing what they had provided to other Legal practices, and having taken up references, Qubiqa were appointed by the client.

After an in-depth survey was carried out on the current filing, each section of area was planned according to the department’s requirements that it was going to serve. In the end, the filing was a mixture of shelves (for mainly document wallets, lever arch and box files) and lateral hanging bars for lateral suspension filing. In some areas there were a combination of the two with ‘combi filing’ on each shelving level. Security was provided by Floorlocks in some sections for confidential filing.

In all, ten separate systems were provided over the 3 floors, eight of these being in open access areas and two being in secure rooms. A total of 1545 linear metres of filing has made sure that Morton Fraser has enough filing space now and for the foreseeable future.

Recently, Alasdair MacRitchie has left the firm, but Kevin Kendrick the new Business Services Manager has commented:

“We are delighted with the roller racking supplied by Qubiqa. It offers us flexible storage, makes very efficient use of space, is simple, practical and looks perfectly in keeping with our smart, high spec office space.”
