Part 1 covers the manufacturing and, where appropriate, structural design characteristics of structural steel components for use in the construction industry and provides four classes of accreditation. In keeping with its pre-eminent position within the industry, following assessments of its manufacturing systems by SCCS (The Steel Construction Certification Scheme), Metsec’s products will be accredited to Class 4, the highest possible attainment within BS EN 1090-1. The accreditation will provide the industry with absolute assurance on the use of Metsec purlins, Metframe, SFS and accessories in the construction of anything from a warehouse to a power station.
Roy Burns, divisional managing director for Metsec’s Lightweight Structural Systems, states, “CE marking of structural steel systems is a great step forward for the industry. It places greater emphasis on product quality and safety and should obviate the switching of an engineer’s specifications to sub-standard steel. The unique referencing that accompanies the CE mark on the product will enable steel components to be traced back to the manufacturer, assuring the engineer that the product used is that which has been specified.”

Metsec has also recently launched the latest version of its building shell design software, MetSPEC 12, which includes a facility to design using Eurocodes. “This latest development adds further value to the Metsec package and makes our customers’ lives that bit easier by helping them to conform to the new European standard.“ says Roy.
