Construction of the demonstration house, by the contractors Osborne, started on 1 March 2006 and was completed by mid-June. The external wall shell, comprising a Structural Insulated Panel system (SIPs) called Jabhouse, was erected in just two days and includes Alumasc’s M.R. ST Silkolitt render as part of the weatherproofing elements. The building's design consultants - Baily Garner, WSP and Tully De'Ath - incorporated M.R. ST lightweight renders as part of the overall design solution for the property due to the longevity and inherent weathering features of silicone render, and the aesthetic vibrancy and performance requirements the product offered.
The energy saving measures undertaken on the demonstration house resulted in high levels of insulation (walls U-value of 0.15 W/m2K or better) and it has achieved an EcoHomes 'excellent' rating.
M.R. ST Silkolitt 1.5mm is a silicone based render with a rolled texture which offers many advantages including excellent colour consistency and fastness. The render is self cleansing and water repellent yet offers good vapour permeability. It creates a weatherproof exterior which is durable, fire-safe, highly resistant to impact damage and has only minimal maintenance demands. Available in over 400 coordinated colour shades, M.R. ST Silkolitt provides the designer with great scope to create imaginative, aesthetically pleasing facades.
The Osborne demonstration house will stay in place on the BRE Innovation Park for two years.
