Throughout June The Building Centre will be putting on a variety of exhibitions, installations and events as part of this year’s London Festival of Architecture. The theme for this year’s festival is ‘community’.
Sinan: The First Starchitect, will showcase the work of Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan who's buildings and structures transformed the Istanbul skyline. Hundreds of places for worship and religious studies were constructed in his lifetime which were not only visually magnificent, they also provided practical amenities such as schools and community centres. Sinan: The First Starchitect will explore the impact this 16th Century architect has had on contemporary architecture and his influence on the wider design community.
Re/making The Street looks at how residential urban streets are much more than just roads. They are remarkably individual, rich environments that make, shape and support communities and society. The exhibition features as its centrepiece an installation that deconstructs the design and planning behind one street, visitors will be able to walk through a scale model and examine key issues in street making.
Lenses on a Landscape Genius brings together leading contemporary photographers to explore and celebrate the work of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. This unique exhibition is curated as part of the year-long Capability Brown Festival, which marks 300 years since the eminent landscape architects birth. Once private, many of Capability Brown’s landscapes are now open to the public, inspiring a much wider audience and influencing today's design community.
The 2016 London Festival of Architecture takes place from 1-30 June and aims to connect with as many people as possible, in ways that demonstrate architecture’s relevance to London and its diverse communities. The community theme will explore how Londoners and visitors to the city can be active participants in its growth and evolution – from reinterpreting or redesigning familiar places and spaces through installations and animations, to testing interactive forms of consultation and planning for future development.
