Following extensive flooding of Lewes in 2000, the Sussex Ouse Flood Management Strategy was published The Strategy considered Lewes to be comprised of several areas known as flood cells. One of these flood cells in Lewes is know as the Cliffe cell.
The work included raising existing flood wall heights, building new walls and installing floodgates to a 1 in 100 year Standard of Protection (SoP).
The new wall construction is a ‘Lytag® LWA concrete base with shear key and concrete flood wall’. A significant reduction of around 25% in weight was achieved for the concrete with brickwork clad wall.
The designers of the scheme ensured that the materials and design matched those previously used in the Cliffe conservation area.
