Landscape integration of the Seacon Logistics warehouse

21 Nov 2024
Case study

Herman Vaessen | Tuin | Boom | Groen has installed an impressive greening project at Seacon Logistics in Venlo. A 275-meter-long green wall has been placed above the loading docks, covering a total area of 700 square meters. The goal of this project is to enhance the ecological and aesthetic value of Seacon Logistics’ location. The WallPlanter® green wall system contributes to achieving a BREEAM Very-Good-certification, emphasizing the commitment to sustainability and innovation. Additionally, the green wall improves the building’s integration into the surrounding landscape.

A sustainable façade of vibrant greenery
The project involves the installation of a 700-square-meter green wall on the new Seacon Logistics warehouse. The WallPlanter system, featuring Hedera helix ‘Woerner’, is supported by a robust structural framework. Each planter is automatically provided with sufficient water and nutrients through a smart irrigation system. This innovative setup ensures a sustainable, vibrant green façade that not only enhances the aesthetic value but also significantly improves the building’s ecological footprint. This green wall contributes to a greener and more integrated environment, allowing the building to blend seamlessly into the landscape.

Positive impact of the green wall at Seacon Logistics
This 700 m² green wall has a significant impact, both socially and environmentally, through:

Vinkje (symbool) - Wikipedia Oxygen production: Through photosynthesis, the green wall converts carbon dioxide into oxygen

Vinkje (symbool) - Wikipedia Fine particulate matter capture (PM10): The green wall captures 4.2 kilograms of fine particulate matter annually, equivalent to the impact of 30 trees*

Vinkje (symbool) - Wikipedia Social impact: The WallPlanter system is produced and cultivated according to PSO certification in Mobilane’s social workplace, which provides employment to 250 colleagues with barriers to the regular job market

Vinkje (symbool) - Wikipedia Biodiversity: The green wall promotes local biodiversity, offering shelter and nesting opportunities for birds, butterflies and insects

Vinkje (symbool) - Wikipedia Well-being: Scientific studies show that greenery contributes to a positive mindset among employees, leading to improved job satisfaction and reduced sickness**

A conscious choice for the WallPlanter green wall system
According to Ralf Vaessen, director of Herman Vaessen Tuin | Boom | Groen, the choice of the WallPlanter system was a deliberate step: “To ensure the landscape integration of this new building along the A67 motorway, the government required greening on the property. Since we could not implement a ground-based green wall above the loading docks, we sought a system that is sustainable and can be installed at height. Given our long-standing collaboration with Mobilane, we quickly landed on the WallPlanter system.”

Knowledge and technical expertise
The experience with the WallPlanter system has been positive from the start. “The preparation for the project went very smoothly in close co-operation with Mobilane,” said Ralf Vaessen. “Mobilane has a wealth of expertise, so both we and our client were well-informed about the technical provisions that needed to be made. Because we prepared this thoroughly, the client was able to implement it in their building on time, allowing us to start installation immediately at the beginning of the project. The planters are very accurate and everything fits perfectly! The technical aspects regarding irrigation also went very well and work fantastically. As we have experienced for years, the collaboration on this project once again went seamlessly. The support on-site during the project start and the aftersales service has also been excellent. You are attentive to matters, and in case of an emergency, you respond immediately and don’t leave the client to handle it alone with their contractor.”

Innovation and collaboration as the foundation for success
The coordination and seamless collaboration between Herman Vaessen, Mobilane and other partners contributed to the timely completion of the project. Challenges such as irrigation efficiency were addressed through joint solutions and the integration of advanced technologies in collaboration with Mastop. This project serves as an example of successful collaboration and innovation in greening urban environments.
