KOKO Theatre Renovation

25 Jan 2023
Case study

We are excited to have been involved in the redevelopment of KOKO, a London landmark that had been closed since March 2019 after a huge fire had devastated much of the building.

Over 120 years old, the original Grade 2 listed Camden theatre has hosted iconic acts from The Rolling Stones, Amy Winehouse, Kanye West, Monty Python and even Charlie Chaplin, to name a few.

Rebranded as KOKO in 2004, the most recent owners have now relaunched the £70m renovated space after six years of planning and three years of restoration.

Matthew Blaylock, Commercial Manager at Mumford & Wood, explains;

“We were approached by Make One Group to work on this amazing project, to help breathe some life back into this historic building.

This project is particularly challenging due to the heritage profile requirements combined with the requirement for high acoustic performance.

Through our product development we tested for, and achieved, the required acoustic rating shortly before being chosen as the window manufacturer for this project.

The front elevation of KOKO has single glazed windows & doors with period profiles. The windows had been painted white over the years, but we stained the replacements Teak & Nut to closely match the original architect’s vision.

The side and rear elevations have a series of enhanced acoustic vertical sliding and casements windows, with doors that feature special panel mouldings which match the original designs.

We fitted the windows to the pub, restaurant, library, piano bar, jazz bar, rehearsal rooms & private viewing areas of the main concert hall.

We really enjoy bringing these old buildings back to their former glory, especially where there is so much history and creativity.”
