Knauf Insulation Wins 3R Award

16 Dec 2011
News

Knauf Insulation’s ThermoShell® Internal Wall Insulation (IWI) system has won the Product Innovation category of the 3R Awards (Refurb, Rethink, Retrofit), held at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington.

The awards recognise and celebrate design, engineering and construction excellence that prolongs the active life of buildings and infrastructure, helping to forward the lower energy, lower carbon agenda.

With approximately 7 million solid wall domestic properties in the UK, many of which are poorly insulated and highly energy inefficient, upgrading the thermal performance of solid walls is a key priority for sustainable refurbishment.  Specifically designed for this purpose, the ThermoShell IWI system is a flexible, cost effective and highly efficient solution that does not alter the external façade of the building.

The simplicity of the system allows a competent tradesman to become an Accredited Installer, able to fit and finish the system using a traditional plaster skim finish or dry lining techniques.  No scaffolding is required and the system can be installed on a room-by-room basis, or as part of a whole house refurbishment plan.

Craig O’Donnell, Business Development Manager - Residential Refurbishment at Knauf Insulation, received the award from the Government’s Chief Construction Adviser, Paul Morell.  Craig said: “We are extremely pleased to receive such prestigious recognition for our IWI system.  Insulation has a critical role to play in creating a sustainable built environment and manufacturers have an important responsibility to ensure that products and manufacturing processes are of an extremely high standard in order to meet that need.  We are proud to take that responsibility seriously, as this award clearly demonstrates.”

Paul Finch, Editorial Director of The Architects' Journal, which organises the awards, said: Retrofit and creative adaptation will be critical if we are to develop sustainable, long-term built environments. They are also essential if we are going to meet the challenge of a low-carbon future. These awards are a recognition and celebration of great projects and products, and will promote exemplars across the construction industry.”
