Re-built by Main Contractors Kier Moss on the site of the old school, adjacent to the historic venue for the annual Wenlock Olympian Games, the inspiration for the modern day Olympics, William Brookes School, a secondary comprehensive based in Much Wenlock has a unique connection to the international event and, as the UK’s only Coubertin School, follows Olympian ideals of striving for best performances in all endeavours.
But the ambitions for the new £27m Performing Arts and Maths & Computing specialist school, designed by Capita Symonds, cover more than academic, sporting and artistic excellence, as Chris Townsend, Architectural Technologist at Capita Symonds explained. “Sustainable technologies such as a super insulated envelope, solar shading and solar panels have been incorporated within the design to reduce ongoing costs and to ensure that the building has little environmental impact.
“The client, Shropshire Council was keen to enhance the school’s sustainable credentials and therefore set a brief to design a building that was thermally enhanced beyond the requirements of Part L2A (2006); produced a significant reduction in carbon emissions; and achieved a BREEAM rating of Very Good.
“The specification of Kingspan (a joint one between us, the architects, and the Main Contractor, Kier Moss) was fundamental in ensuring that we could meet these ambitious requirements. Both companies were aware of Kingspan Insulation’s environmental credentials and the benefits that these products provide - with very low GWP’s (global warming potential) and ODP’s (ozone depletion potential) being key governing factors.”
“Kingspan were able to provide a comprehensive U-value calculation service for the walls, floor and roof build ups and worked closely with the design team to ensure that the products specified could be fully integrated within the parameters of each element.”
Kingspan Kooltherm K3 Floorboard provides protection to the school’s floors; Kingspan Thermaroof TR26 LPC/FM was installed beneath a mechanically fixed singly-ply waterproofing membrane for the flat roofs and the school’s wall insulation comprises a combination of Kingspan Thermawall TW50 and TW55.
The Kingspan Kooltherm and Therma product ranges can achieve thermal conductivities as low as 0.020 and 0.022 W/m.K respectively. Together these products will reduce CO2 emissions as a result of the school’s lower energy use and reduce fuel bills for years to come.
William Brookes School is adjacent to the site of the Wenlock Olympian Games, the inspiration for the modern Olympic Movement and is named after its founder, Dr William Penny Brookes. The school follows the sporting philosophy of Pierre de Coubertin, who set up the first International Olympic Committee. Keeping that Olympian tradition alive, the school now boasts a new sports hall and gymnasium and a 25-metre solar-heated swimming pool among the first rate sporting and arts facilities available to its 1,050 students.
