Kingspan Environmental warms a community

11 Jan 2016
Case study

In this SEAI-funded project, Smart Energy (a community based organisation) partnered with Donegal County Council and Retrofit Energy Ireland in a pilot scheme to improve energy efficiency across 21 homes (a mixture of privately owned and social housing) and a community centre.

The objective was to improve the community’s overall quality of life, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and lower the energy bills for each building, while ensuring any renewable solutions supplied efficient, reliable sources of energy.

The houses were 30-40 years old, lacked insulation and had highly inefficient solid fuel heating systems.

The Kingspan Solution

Kingspan Environmental worked closely with Alternative Energy Ireland (AEI) to install Thermomax HP400 solar thermal vacuum tube collectors and hot water cylinders, to heat water in the buildings and to support new condensing oil burners.

The highly efficient solar thermal collectors will supply up to 70 per cent of a property’s hot water needs, all year round.

Kingspan Environmental Thermomax vacuum tubes were also placed on the roof of the community building to supply hot water to the centre, which also houses a gym and a sports hall which is in regular use. “In this SEAI funded project, Smart Energy partnered with Donegal County Council and Retrofit Energy Ireland delivered energy efficient upgrades through an Area Based Pilot Scheme/p This project included the installation of Kingspan’s newest solar technology to both private and public housing units that were in much need of an energy based upgrade. The project was a great success and Alternative Energy Ireland did a fantastic job on the installation of Kingspans newest solar panels. It is anticipated that these systems will benefit all housing occupants for many decades to come.” Eamonn Mahon from Donegal county council
