Kingspan delivers a raised access floor with a high-quality engineered timber overlay within Scotland’s iconic design museum, which has been rated ‘Excellent’ at its design stage BREEAM assessment.
V&A Dundee, the £80 million museum is designed by KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES with PiM.studio Architects and James F Stephen Architects. Built by BAM Construction on behalf of Dundee City Council, it is a visually-striking, angular structure. It provides a new social and cultural hub, comprising 1,650 m2 of exhibition space connected to the historic riverfront. The museum’s unique design reveals two buildings at ground floor level which merge from the second floor to create an open foyer and further galleries.
Kingspan Access Floors supplied RMG600 medium grade system for the museum, finished with Attiro magnetic engineered timber flooring. This provided a high specification floor with a finish for the second-floor gallery space including a high aesthetic overlay for easy access to the void below. Maurizio Mucciola, Director at PiM.Studio Architects, commented on the specification:
“Kingspan RMG600 and Attiro was used on the second-floor circulation, foyer and galleries. The raised floor and Attiro system was chosen to provide flexibility, especially to the gallery spaces which might need to be reconfigured for different exhibitions.”
Attiro engineered timber features a high-quality oak veneer and is magnetically attached to the Kingspan RMG600 raised flooring system. This created the look and feel of a high-end timber floor whilst also allowing simple access to the service spaces beneath. Individual staves can be lifted and returned with minimal risk of damage and the floor could also be walked on as soon as it was laid, assisting project scheduling.
Available in a wide range of sizes and finishes to suit each project’s particular requirements, Attiro by Kingspan can be installed on any new or existing steel encapsulated raised flooring system. The RMG600 raised flooring system offers an ideal solution for high traffic public areas boasting excellent acoustic dampening and structural performance backed with a 25-year total system warranty.
As part of V&A Dundee’s commitments, considerable care was taken to ensure the materials specified met the highest standards in responsible sourcing. Attiro and RMG600 have FSC® third party Chain of Custody certification and Kingspan Access Floors were also the first access flooring manufacturer in the world to issue an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and a Health Product Declaration (HPD).
