Jura limestone cladding at Greenwich University

13 Oct 2015
Case study

The stunning new library and School of Architecture and Construction for Greenwich University occupies an important site within the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. It is a grand scheme offering superb design that is sensitive to its surroundings.

The development consists of two interlinked buildings ranging between three and four storeys high with a long, sweeping curved façade on Stockwell Street. Szerelmey installed the structural steel framework and all the Jura limestone cladding.

The Jura, which comes from a Bavarian quarry was specially selected for its honed finish, aesthetic appeal and hard wearing properties. It has a degree of fossilisation within it which lends great variation in colour and pattern to the surface. The cladding consists of hand set Jura briquettes of 200mm high and varying lengths, set with lime mortar. In addition Szerelmey has installed the steel work and clad the roof section on block E to create a “secret garden”.

The building has won a RIBA National Award, 2015 and a RIBA London Regional Award, 2015.
