Housing Association, Coventry

Case study

REHAU’s RAUFERNO fire rated PVC-U system has helped commercial fabricator Astraseal win a screen replacement contract for Whitefriars Housing Association in Coventry, part of WM Housing Group.

The HA’s property services department wanted to replace single glazed timber screens in 13 blocks of maisonettes with a low maintenance, thermally efficient PVC-U alternative, but decided to increase the specification to include fire resistance in order to maximise the safety of the residents.

The REHAU RAUFERNO solution was the only fire-rated PVC-U product which met this specification and, as an established specialist RAUFERNO fabricator and a proven supplier to Whitefriars, Astraseal successfully won a competitive tender process.

The new screens are sited between communal stairwells and private balconies in the three storey blocks enabling Whitefriars to minimise the risk of fire spreading from the balconies into the shared areas and escape routes.

In total, 52 screens have now been installed, measuring an average of 2.5m² each.  REHAU’s commercial sales team supported Astraseal with the tender, helping them to achieve the maximum sizes with the best design results.

Astraseal has been accredited by REHAU to fabricate and install its patented RAUFERNO system since 2008.  Based on the REHAU TOTAL70C 70mm window profile, RAUFERNO incorporates an intumescent material which enables it to satisfy the fire safety requirements of BS476 Parts 20 and 22 and the 1992 Building Regulations.

It is FIRAS approved and fully certified by the Warrington Fire Research Centre.

Astraseal has further developed its specialist product range to include the manufacture and supply of 30 and 60 minute front entrance doors in a wide range of styles and colours.
