Linthwaite House in Cumbria undertook a 12-month, £10 million renovation project including a 30-bedroom refurbishment plan. The project included the replacement of a small Victorian-style conservatory with a large orangery to create a spacious bar/lounge/dining area to allow guests to better enjoy the outstanding panoramic views of Windermere and the surrounding fells. Westbury Garden Rooms was the supplier of choice, following competitive tenders from several other specialists competing for this prestigious project.
Set in the heart of the Lake District, the architecture of the hotel is typical of the area and therefore the design of the orangery needed to work in harmony with the project brief of ‘modern English’.
The new orangery is a single storey structure with a central dividing wall, large pocket sliding doors, painted timber frames and fascias and granite base walls to match the host building. The roof is weather finished in high-performance flag membrane. The orangery has a generous height, with painted frames built in Accoya, giving an internal ceiling height of 2,700mm.
The building includes a high performance flat roof with a matching pair of feature pyramid form roof lanterns. Adjacent to the host building, the exterior of the flat roof is sedum planted to create a green ‘living roof surface’.
Comprising of a generous informal seating area, bar, dining zones for hotel guests and non-resident functions, the large orangery is situated adjacent to a large terrace, designed to accept a marquee for large events. The new addition creates a principal reception room that is open and airy with dramatic views and sits harmoniously with the building’s own architecture to create an extraordinary and luxurious building that is unique to the Lake District.
