News

Liverpool triumphed last night (Thursday 16 October) when the Everyman Theatre by Haworth Tompkins scooped the 2014 RIBA Stirling Prize.

The new Everyman building replaces the old theatre on the same site in the heart of Liverpool, it is the first new-build theatre by Haworth Tompinks. Recycled materials feature throughout, including 25,000 bricks from the old Everyman. The bar, counters and table tops are made from Iroko re-cycled from old laboratory bench tops and flooring is made from recycled recycled cork and rubber. The Everyman is on target to achieve BREEAM Excellent.

The practice beat five others to the prize - Library of Birmingham by Mecanoo; London Aquatics Centre by Zaha Hadid Architects; London School of Economics - Saw Swee Hock Student Centre by O’Donnell + Tuomey Architects; Manchester School of Art by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios; and The Shard by Renzo Piano Building Workshop.

The Building Centre was there to cheer on the winners, the audience erupted in applause on announcement of Haworth Tompkins surprise victory.
