With classic lines and an airy interior, this finely crafted Orangery extension has transformed the rear of this Kent property. Designed to create more space, this beautiful timber orangery provides a new light and elegant living area for the family to enjoy for years to come.
Both the kitchen and lounge in the main house originally overlooked a rather cheerless and underused outdoor patio area. Taking a collaborative approach, we worked with the client to design a bright and appealing orangery that would expand the property out into the patio area, creating a large and contemporary family room.
A widened opening was built into the side of the kitchen, replacing the existing exterior window and low wall. While most orangeries tend to be accessible from only the kitchen or breakfast room, in this design the existing doors leading from the lounge were also kept in place, connecting the extension to both areas.
It was important that the orangery extension would ‘nestle’ into the rest of the home and complement the property’s classic country style. Sympathetically designed to complement the traditional exterior of the home, the structure was carefully matched to the existing brickwork of the property, helping to retain its original character.
Designed with exacting precision, the beautifully crafted roof lantern fills the room with natural light, giving a spacious and indulgent feel. Ensuring a perfect fit, Westbury raised the first-floor window cills in the main house to make room for the orangery’s flat roof structure.
Two automatic, thermostatic double air vents maintain a comfortable temperature, opening when the room warms up to draw the hot air up and create air flow, and closing as it cools or when the first drops of rain are detected. Large double bi-folding doors can be opened during the summer months, leading out onto the new paved seating area and connecting the orangery with the green lawn and farmlands beyond.
