F. Ball products top of the class

21 Oct 2015
Case study

A range of high performance floor preparation products from F. Ball have been used in the refurbishment of Southborough High School in Surbiton, Surrey. F. Ball’s Stopgap Green Bag floor smoothing underlayment and the brand new F. Ball Stycco Flex rapid curing flexible adhesive in a tube were used to create a professional, lasting finish for the main corridor of the school. By using professionally formulated, high performance products from F. Ball, contractors were able to complete the installation of new floorcoverings within the timescale allowed leading up to the start of term.

Flooring contractors from CWC Flooring were contracted by the school to refurbish the building’s central corridor, including the adjoining staircases, as the existing floorcoverings were beginning to peel away from the subfloor. The new installation, which is part of a large refurbishment project at the school, required the raising and levelling of the main corridor.

After applying F. Ball’s Stopgap P131 primer, contractors installed 3-5mm of Stopgap Green Bag smoothing underlayment onto the subfloor in order to create an even, smooth surface. Stopgap Green Bag is a general-purpose, low-odour, fast setting smoothing underlayment with excellent self-smoothing properties.  Delivering high performance, it is designed for use in light to heavy-duty applications, making it suitable for use in high traffic areas such as schools or hospitals.

Once the subfloor was levelled, contractors installed the new Polyflor Vinyl floorcoverings using F. Ball’s Styccobond F44 solvent-free acrylic adhesive, which has been purpose designed for adhering resilient floorcoverings.

Contractors then used the new Stycco Flex high strength, flexible tube adhesive to fix new stair nosings to the refurbished staircases. The high performance adhesive, recently launched by F. Ball, is an easy to use, rapid curing adhesive, with high initial grab and a fast build-up of bond strength. It has been specifically designed to secure stair nosings and carpet gripper, PVC cladding, skirting boards and trims, without the need for mechanical fixing.

Commenting on the job, Pierre Allen, Managing Director at CWC Flooring, said: “When we have a tight deadline, I will always use F. Ball products, because you know for certain that you’re using a product that performs exactly as it is supposed to. Green Bag sets quickly, and leaves a high quality finish, and Stycco Flex was the obvious choice for the stair nosings as safety is a top priority for any school project.”
