F. Ball Ensures a Safe Floor at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary

F. Ball and Co. Ltd’s high performance subfloor preparation products and flooring adhesives have been used to create a safe, level and hard-wearing floor in the new Children’s Day Treatment Unit at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. Stopgap Green Bag and 114 Liquid smoothing underlayment provided excellent smoothing properties and a seamless finish for the hospital floor. In addition, Styccobond F46, a solvent-free acrylic adhesive, was used to adhere the new vinyl floorcovering.

Situated on the third floor of the hospital, the area for the new Children’s Day Treatment Unit was created by adjoining separate rooms in the building. Following the removal of several walls, Dumfries based flooring contractors, A & H Floor Covering Specialists Ltd, were left with an uneven subfloor surface which needed to be raised by up to 6mm and levelled in order to create a safe and durable floor surface for the new hospital treatment unit.

The existing Flotex and carpet floorcoverings were removed and the subfloor was prepared to remove any adhesive prior to the priming of the subfloor with Stopgap P131. A general purpose primer, Stopgap P131 prevents smoothing underlayments drying out too rapidly and promotes their adhesion to the subfloor.

Stopgap Green Bag and 114 Liquid smoothing underlayment was then installed directly onto the primed subfloor surface at thicknesses of between 3 – 6mm to ensure a smooth and even surface for the final vinyl floorcovering. A fast-setting smoothing underlayment, Stopgap Green Bag has excellent flow and self-smoothing properties allowing a quick and simple installation throughout the 230m2 area.

Stopgap Green Bag mixed with 114 Liquid is the ideal product for healthcare installations as the low odour and protein and latex free formulation of the product makes it suitable for use in clinical and biologically sensitive environments. Moreover, its high compressive strength makes it ideal for heavy-duty areas such as a hospital treatment unit.

Following the installation of the smoothing underlayment, Styccobond F46 acrylic adhesive was applied to adhere the vinyl floorcoverings, from manufacturers Gerflor Ltd and Polyflor Ltd, to the prepared subfloor. A solvent free acrylic polymer emulsion adhesive, Styccobond F46 provides a high bond strength and is protected against bio-degradation, making it ideal for use in clinical areas.

Roy Henderson, Managing Director at A & H Floor Covering Specialists Ltd, comments: “F. Ball’s products were ideal for the project – the fast drying time of Stopgap Green Bag allowed us to keep within the short time leads required by the hospital. I regularly use F. Ball’s products so I was confident that they would create a great finish which was both safe and durable for the demanding healthcare environment.”
