The project was the conversion of a car sales and repair facility into a distribution centre for Reeve The Baker. The floor was in a poor condition and badly contaminated with oil in some areas. As the area was to be used for the storage of flour and foodstuff, Peter was concerned that floor should be as hygienic as possible. So he asked F. Ball for technical help.
Their first recommendation was that the 220 m² floor should be mechanically scabbled to remove the contaminants. Then when testing for moisture proved positive, they recommended the application of Stopgap 900 DPM-PREP the only floor smoothing compound specifically formulated for use under damp proof membranes. It has very low expansion when saturated with water, which overcomes the danger of the smoothing compound expanding and causing the DPM to fail.
This was followed by two coats of Stopgap F75 high performance Waterproof Surface Membrane, which is suitable for use where the relative humidity of the floor is above 92%. It is pigmented red to enable uniform coverage to be obtained.
Finally Stopgap 800 Wearcoat commercial and industrial grade Self-levelling Wearing Surface was applied. It was sealed with Stopgap Seal to resist the spillage of water and other fluids and to ease maintenance by reducing the adhesion of dirt and other debris.
Peter found the F. Ball products very easy to use, particularly Stopgap 800. “It has provided a finish as smooth as a baby’s bottom,” he says.
