F. Ball creates contemporary floor at Focal Point Gallery

F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s Stopgap 800 Wearcoat self-levelling wearing surface has been used to create a durable, smooth and contemporary floor at Focal Point Gallery in Southend Central Library, as part of an extensive refurbishment programme.

Since opening in 1991, Focal Point Gallery has established itself as an innovative gallery of contemporary visual art, with both a regional and national profile. As part the recent refurbishment project, 140m2 of flooring was upgraded by contractor, Four Star Flooring.

A commercial and industrial grade floor compound, Stopgap 800 Wearcoat can be used for upgrading and renovating existing internal floors in light to heavy-duty applications where traditional floorcoverings are not required, and is suitable for installation over a wide range of subfloor types. It is typically used in areas such as storerooms, post rooms, workshops and corridors, and, as a protein-free product, it is also suitable for use in biologically sensitive areas such as hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

In Focal Point Gallery, Stopgap 800 Wearcoat was specified to create a contemporary, minimalist floor surface that is also highly resilient; capable of maintaining its aesthetic appearance over time, as well as withstanding frequent, high levels of footfall.

Prior to the application of Stopgap 800 Wearcoat, the floor was primed using F. Ball’s Stopgap P131 general-purpose, neoprene primer. Priming the surface beforehand prevented rapid drying of the water-based compound and promoted its adhesion to the subfloor. Stopgap 800 was applied directly onto the primed subfloor at a thickness of 6mm.

With excellent flow and self-smoothing properties, Stopgap 800 Wearcoat provided ease of installation, requiring minimal work with a smoothing trowel. To ensure a uniform surface appearance, a spiked roller was used to eliminate entrapped air and smooth out flow lines.

The new floor surface was sealed using Stopgap Seal, a clear water-dispersed modified polyurethane sealer, designed specifically for application over Stopgap 800 Wearcoat. Stopgap Seal will help to protect the surface from spillage of water or other liquids, as well as ease maintenance by reducing the adhesion of dirt and other debris. It also enhances the aesthetic appearance of the floor by creating a shiny finish.

Milton Walton, Contract Manager at Four Star Flooring, comments: “The Focal Point Gallery was very pleased with the new floor. The smooth and glossy surface of the Stopgap 800 Wearcoat combined with Stopgap Seal has given them the contemporary and glossy look they were hoping to achieve. In terms of application, the excellent self-smoothing properties of Stopgap 800 Wearcoat minimised the installation time, helping us to keep within the deadline for the project.”
