Dudley College, Dudley, West Midlands

4 Oct 2011
Case study
Up to 10,000 students who attend Dudley College will have a surprise when they return in September- a completely new sustainable café area.

Leading commercial kitchen company CHR Equipment, based in Bamber Bridge, Preston, has won the £1/4m contract to revamp the central atrium at the College’s 75 years-old Broadway Campus into a fully integrated refreshment zone.

As lead contractor, CHR will manage the whole project, including removal of the existing refectory, kiosk, shop and coffee bar, and installation of a new café, lounge and retail areas, toilets, décor and signage- all within the two months of summer recess, and to high standards of sustainability.

Paul Neville, CHR Equipment sales director, says, “Dudley College is setting a great example of how to rejuvenate an area to create a stimulating environment for its students, and an enhanced revenue stream for the College. The Eco Café uses recycled materials, hydro carbon refrigeration, LED light…..even the coffee will be sustainable, being FairTrade under the ‘We Proudly Brew’ banner. The whole project has been designed to ensure money invested by the College is channelled back into the local economy and this will be as much as 50% of the spend.”

The refit aims to provide students with state-of-the-art facilities ahead of the College’s creation of a £30m learning quarter in the town- Evolve- which will take four years to build, and provide one central educational point in place of the current five campuses across the town.

The Dudley College project begins as CHR wins contracts to design, supply and install kitchens for three new schools in LIncolnshire, and to supplement facilities at Cadbury World, where it installed a new kitchen last year which went on to win a national industry award for sustainability.

Founded 20 years ago, CHR Equipment (www.chrequipment.co.uk) has built a reputation for consistently delivering practical solutions, applying innovative thinking and utilizing developments in technology to create commercial catering solutions on time and to budget whether new build or refurbishment of a hotel or college through to the upper echelons of Michelin-starred establishments and stadia It has, for three years in succession, won national CEDA (Catering Equipment Distributors Association) Awards, each in a different category.
