Doncaster Royal Infirmary Children’s Ward, Doncaster

7 Dec 2011
Case study
Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s youngest patients have taken up residence in brand new wards. The multi-million pound scheme to create the combined Women’s & Children's Hospital with state-of-the-art, modern facilities is now home to youngsters needing hospital care for their medical problems.

The new Children’s Ward and Observation Unit has a total of 41 beds including two HDU (High Dependency Unit) beds and there will be improved facilities for parents wishing to stay with their child overnight. Special features reflect the choices of children involved in the design and equipping of the new unit including an American-style diner, fitness area, cinema and internet access.

Main contractor, Togel Contractors Limited specified doorsets from Leaderflush Shapland’s Designer, Extended Performance and Plasform ranges for the project to meet performance characteristics of 60 minutes fire resistance and 30 RwdB sound reduction.

With hygiene being such an important consideration in hospitals, all Leaderflush Shapland veneered doorsets incorporate Hygienilac as standard into the wood lacquer. Hygienilac is Leaderflush Shapland’s highly effective antimicrobial finish which kills most species of bacteria including C.diff, Salmonella and E Coli reducing the potential risk of such bacteria causing Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs).

Plasform doorsets are also ideal for healthcare environments; their rounded postformed edges minimise the build-up of airborne particles and can be easily wiped or washed clean. Plasform gives flexibility for many applications with tremendous scope for demonstrating flair through colourful or simple, contemporary designs – the Doncaster Children’s Ward incorporates a variety of colourful doorsets including vanilla, marine blue, clementine and lime.
Doorsets were constructed using EnduraCor, Leaderflush Shapland’s exclusive engineered performance core whose severe duty rating makes it especially suitable for busy hospital environments where doors are subject to frequent passage of heavy trolleys, beds and other bulky items. These doors can cope with the most demanding requirements such as high fire resistance, sound reduction and smoke control to comply with HTM 69 guidance.
