Cupa Pizarras Achieves Carbon Neutrality

16 Sep 2020
News

World leader in natural slate production, CUPA PIZARRAS, has become a carbon-neutral company according to the Carbon Trust. The achievement highlights the company’s commitment to sustainable practices and was achieved by working with Carbon Footprint Ltd. and The Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) project to protect and plant trees in both the UK and the Amazon rainforest.

Climate change has become a global challenge. CUPA PIZARRAS chose to commit to two different projects to offset emissions generated from its quarries in Spain. The first programme with Carbon Footprint Ltd. facilitated the planting of trees in UK school grounds for every tonne of CO2 generated. The second project offset an additional tonne of CO2 through the REDD Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) project, which acts to plant trees and protect the Amazon from deforestation – the largest remaining rainforest in the world.

In addition, over the next two years, CUPA PIZARRAS is committed to reducing its greenhouse emissions by 5%. This will be achieved through the implementation of new measures such as sustainable motor vehicles, the substitution of all lighting with LED solutions, and a reduction in the consumption of electricity used by the company worldwide.

“We are very proud to achieve this certification with the Carbon Trust. Carbon neutrality is part of a broader and ambitious plan we are working on that includes further actions in terms of sustainability, achieving a circular economy and the fight against climate change,” said Belén Díaz López, Integrated Quality and Environment System Manager at CUPA PIZARRAS.

The Carbon Trust certification reinforces CUPA PIZARRAS’ commitment to sustainability. In addition to achieving carbon neutrality, CUPA PIZARRAS has already received the ISO 14001certification, FDES certification, and the BRE Global Verification, all of which are the highest international environmental accreditations. Furthermore, CUPA PIZARRAS’ natural slate production methods already have sustainability at their core, with slate naturally produced and then extracted and cut without using any chemical products, artificial materials or combustion processes.
