Make’s simple and sustainably designed Copper Box is one of only four permanent venues in London’s Olympic Park and the third largest indoor arena in London. Built with adaptability in mind, the Copper Box not only hosted various sports during the 2012 Games but will now operate as a community leisure and training facility covering a broad range of activities, from local sporting events to larger competitions, concerts and exhibitions.
A key feature of the building is the 3,000m2 copper cladding, which has 65% recycled content and can be recycled again in the future. Crucially, this affordable material does not suffer from atmospheric corrosion, will patinate as it ages and requires no cleaning or maintenance. 88 light-pipes are incorporated in the roof, drawing natural light into the venue with the aim of achieving annual energy savings of up to 40%.
All visitors, regardless of disability, enter the arena via a glazed concourse level that encircles the building, offering views of the activity taking place within and illuminating the venue at night. The building secured a BREEAM Excellent rating, has extremely low energy use and was designed for optimum durability.
