Concrete repair and protection at Hemans Estate

8 Oct 2015
Case study

At the 1930s Hemans Estate in Lambeth, a concrete repair and protection package and anti-slip flooring system from Sika has helped to bring a series of housing blocks up to latest performance and aesthetic standards – as part of the £450 million Lambeth Housing Standard (LHS) scheme to improve accommodation and quality of life for social housing residents.

Working in partnership with Lambeth Living – an arm's length management organisation (ALMO) responsible for almost 29,000 homes – Mears Group completes repairs and maintenance to 9,000 council properties. With the estate’s ageing concrete blocks requiring repairs, protection and a new floor coating for the balconies and terraces, Mears and building surveyor Pellings turned to the practical experience and technical expertise of Sika.

Following the application of a repair system comprising a steel primer, bonding agent and repair mortar, two decorative and anti-carbonation coatings were applied.  Offering a proven track record and a simple installation process, these can be applied over existing coatings or directly onto the concrete to offer protection and aesthetic enhancement.

With its ability to be laid and trafficked in the same day, sealer and base coat from Sika proved the ideal solution to refurbish the balconies and terraces.  Installed directly over the existing asphalt for an ever faster application, the system also met the client’s demands for a 10 year life expectancy.

Suitable for a wide range of applications from social housing to car parks to commercial buildings, all Sika products are backed up by a highly experienced technical team who offer expert specification advice and support.  With a comprehensive range of concrete repair and protection solutions – and a new anti-slip flooring to match – Sika has helped to breathe new life into the ageing Hemans Estate.
