Oxford University Museum of Natural History is a carefully-selected collection of entomology, geology, mineralogy, and zoology exhibits. The building, which houses priceless exhibits including life-size dinosaurs, is one of the finest examples of the Victorian Gothic style of architecture, with a colossal glass roof supported by cast iron columns.
Architect Ioana Satnoianu of Oxford University Surveyors had to ensure that the preservation of the traditional aesthetics of the building was done to a very high standard, whilst also conforming to the current stringent fire regulations. Nigel Bates of ISE Fire Products and Services Ltd was contacted to upgrade the many fine examples of the museum’s Victorian doors to meet current fire regulations. He suggested the use of Envirograf® Product 103 (ES/RFC intumescent coating) to upgrade raised-and-fielded doors and a variety of other thick panelled doors to fire doors. This product is supplied as a complete kit, comprising primer coat, intumescent coat, undercoat, and top coat. It is clear and available in matt, semi-gloss, or gloss finishes, as well as white or BS/RAL coloured finishes. ES/RFC can be used both on doors which are less than 32mm thick or more than 33m thick. The project was supervised to completion by Alan Heapy of contractors Benfield and Loxley Ltd of Cowley, Oxford.
