Leading paint manufacturer Johnstone’s has made a colourful contribution to the much-anticipated refurbishment of Chester Town Hall by providing the products, colour combinations and specification support needed to restore the landmark building to its former glory
Located on the site of what used to be a 17th Century Exchange, the Town Hall, which was officially opened in 1869, boasts a myriad of eye-catching and authentic Gothic style features that required specialist attention by painting contractors Taylor Decorating Contractors Ltd during the six-week painting works.
Given the freedom to select the products it thought would bring the best out of the interior following extensive consultation with council officials and architects, the decorators had little hesitation in using Johnstone’s after benefiting from its extensive range and specification support on a host of previous projects.
Consideration had to be given to the Town Hall’s Listed Building status; therefore colours were selected which would ensure that the refurbishment would remain faithful to its rich heritage. The decorators made full use of Johnstone’s unique tinting system, which is the most advanced in the UK and has a range of over 16,000 inspiring colours to choose from, to ensure the colours matched the specification of architects and council officials.
Once the bespoke colour palette had been created, over 175 litres of assorted Johnstone’s products from its Trade Professional and Stormshield ranges, including Pliolite Based Masonry Finish and Eggshell, were tinted to the required shades.
Preparation work for the significant project took the best part of two weeks as every interior detail had to be sugar soaped down before paint was applied. One of the most challenging and time consuming aspects of the project for the decorators was individually painting the Hall’s 64 embossed roses on the 54-foot high ceiling, which required the decorators to construct a soaring scaffolding structure to complete.
Peter Drew of Taylor Decorating Contractors Ltd commented: “This was a very complex and high profile project and so it was vital that both the workmanship and paint products used were of the highest quality. The end result is one that captures the historic feel of the project but will also provide a hardwearing finish to help protect the beauty of the Town Hall for many years to come.”

Although in need of some TLC, the building still has many of its period features intact and so it was important that the colour scheme used was sympathetic to the original architecture.”
