Devised by architect
Renzo Piano, Central
Saint Giles has been attracting attention ever
since its glazed ceramic facades began to
appear in 2009. Now the development’s 13
façades have been covered with ceramic tiles
in bright shades of red, orange, yellow and
green
Central Saint Giles is a 14 storey dense
complex, providing 400,000 sq ft net of office,
retail and residential space on a constrained
site in the West End. The transparent ground
level of the building adds a feeling of
permeability at street level which allows
passers-by to see through and into the site,
which is linked into its surrounds by five
pedestrian entrances leading into a new public
piazza.
Lytag® LWA was utilised in the readymixed
concrete for the composite floor slabs. This
resulted in a reduction of the concrete weight
by approximately 25% when comparing to
standard weight concrete.
The scheme has achieved a
BREEAM"Excellent" rating, as well as a Very Good
EcoHomes rating.
Lytag® LWA, (a wholly
manufactured aggregate, made from a waste
stream) helped in the projects achievements.
