Burgess Park

News

Burgess Park, bordering the Aylesbury Estate in South London, has been transformed from 50 hectares of dysfunctional and dilapidated green space that was unloved and little used into a park that is the pride of the local community. Now its biggest problem is pressure from the increased use and demand for facilities.

The project remodelled the landform, footpath network and spaces so they work logically and safely along with delivering: National Standard BMX track, outdoor gyms, extensive play areas, new gardens, diverse habitats including wetlands, community food growing, and a diverse scale of flexible spaces for everything from large events to quiet contemplation.

The new Burgess Park plays an important role in changing perceptions and stimulating the regeneration of the Aylesbury Estate. Its success has also been a catalyst for Southwark Council to commit to a £30m programme of capital expenditure on parks and open spaces within the borough over the next 10 years, a scale unique within the UK.

What it means for local residents:

“Burgess Park has come alive, and I thank you for what you have done. I don’t think we would manage in London nearly so well, without the park. My whole family feels blessed.”
